Vision
The Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts is responsible for the sustainable management and promotion of the State's unique natural, Aboriginal, historic and cultural heritage assets.
Corporate History
The Department was created in August 2002 as the Department of Tourism, Parks, Heritage and the Arts (DTPHA). It brought into one organisation all of the State's responsibilities for managing, protecting and promoting Tasmania's heritage assets, and provides a strong focus on tourism as a key driver of future economic success. The Department incorporated Arts Tasmania, Tourism Tasmania, the Tasmanian Bicentenary Office and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery from the former Department of State Development; and Heritage Tasmania, the Parks and Wildlife Service and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens from the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment.
In April 2006 the Department also incorporated the Environment Division from Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment. This led to a renaming of the Department to the Department of Tourism, Arts and the Environment (DTAE).
In February 2008 Tourism Tasmania and Events Tasmania moved to the Department of Economic Development and Tourism and DTAE was renamed the Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts.
Our Vision
To have Tasmania valued for its natural and cultural assets and creativity.
Our Mission
To use our collective advantages and expertise to manage and promote our world class natural and cultural assets and activities to enhance Tasmania's economic, social and cultural environment.
To achieve this objective, the Department will continue to work together to:
- deliver attractions and experiences that reflect the unique qualities of the natural and cultural assets of our State;
- continually enhance and improve our facilities, services and programs; and
- engage the community through partnerships and collaborations.
