Tasmania's national parks and reserves are a showcase of our natural environment and are a major drawcard for visitors to the State, as well as being widely used and valued by Tasmanians.
The Parks and Wildlife Service is responsible for the management of Tasmania's parks, reserves and historic sites as well as the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, including the delivery of Crown Land administration. In total that represents 432 reserves covering 2.74 million hectares, or about 40 per cent of the State.
The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is one of the largest conservation reserves in Australia. At 1.38 million hectares, it covers approximately 20 per cent of the land area of Tasmania and is one of only three temperate wilderness areas remaining in the Southern Hemisphere.
The key objective of the Parks and Wildlife Service is to create and maintain a representative and worldÐrenowned reserve system, that achieves the principle goal of conserving the State's natural and cultural heritage while providing for sustainable use and economic opportunities for the Tasmanian community.
