Heritage Tasmania

Divisions ~ Heritage Tasmania

Heritage Tasmania provides support to the Tasmanian Heritage Council. It also coordinates and implements strategies to manage Tasmania's historic heritage. The objective of the Heritage Office is to protect, conserve and promote Tasmania's unique historic heritage assets.

Heritage Tasmania provides expert advice to the Heritage Council to assist the Council in meeting its statutory obligations under the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995.

During 2003-2004, there was a review of the role of Heritage Tasmania, which resulted in the restructuring of the Office within the Department of Tourism, Parks, Heritage and the Arts.

Heritage Tasmania was reshaped, and its primary focus returned to historic heritage. As a result a separate Aboriginal Heritage Office was created and the Cultural Heritage Unit was established within the Parks and Wildlife Service to manage the historic sites under the Parks and Reserves Management Act 2002.

Heritage Tasmania and the Heritage Council also undertook extensive strategic planning exercises to consider their roles and ensure they have the strategies in place to meet the challenges of the future.
